Mountain Mahogany – Mount Baldy

I captured this picture while along the Devil’s Backbone portion of the trail for hiking Mount Baldy. This picture is of a seeding Mountain Mahogany tree. What I love about this picture is that it brings a level of beauty to something that’s at first glance is something most people walk right past.

Mountain Mahogany are trees of the Rose family that are perfect for the high elevations in the San Gabriel Mountain Range above Los Angeles. These shrub like trees grow in twisted formations perfectly groomed by the wind.  Each spring these trees put out small yellowish-white flowers that eventually turn to seeds. The seeds sprout a long furry tail that can be carried in the wind for miles. A single branch can produce dozens and dozens of seeds. These clusters of seeds can give the appearance that the branch is covered in fur. If you’re hiking past the tree, you might not even take notice of it.
